Tufted Wing Chair Makeover (Painting Upholstery)

It's been wayyyy too long since my last furniture project!

I seem to have lost my "oomph".

When it comes to making changes/improvements around the house, it seems like my inspiration and motivation comes in spurts. I'm either super into it, and working on little projects in my spare time....or I'm just not into it at all.

We've had the new flooring (a sort of white-washed wood-look laminate floor) in our basement/lower level for about 6 months now, and I still haven't finished decorating the space! Unbelievable.

It's still nowhere near being finished, but at least I've started!

ok...now...on to the chair.

This lovely big wing chair was picked up by my sister in law, Dayna, for me at our local thrift shop's collectibles sale. How awesome is she!!!?
 :)

It was a great burnt orange colour, and I tried to make it work, but the room was sort of "rejecting" it ;)

so....I did what all good little bloggers do, and started googling/pinteresting (is that a term now??), etc and found this link.  The amazingly innovative Kristy, over at Hyphen Interiors had the guts to paint an upholstered chair.

heck....if she's brave enough, then I should be too, right??

So...I gave it a go.

Now...before you start wondering why mine doesn't look as vibrant as hers.....this is only one coat of paint (so far).

Here's the clincher....I kind of like it like this!

What do you think??

It has a vintage-y "worn leather" look, reminiscent of copper that's turned green.

I'm still debating whether or not I'll give it a second coat, to end up with a more solid, vibrant turquoise hue. Not sure. Still deciding.

This is the "before" shot :)

The big piece of driftwood that we're using as a little "side table" came from the beach...hehe.....you know...borrowed ;). Dustin was such a good sport and carried that sucker all the way to the car! VERY heavy. But totally worth it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions :)

  15. Ok! This post can just in time. I bought two used basic black chairs for my office. But, I decided not to put too much money into them to have it reupholstered and just buy new chairs!
But after seeing your results and Kristy's projects, I'm going to give it a go!

With all that said: Will the paint actually stay on and not rub off (clothing)?

  19. Hey! You have such an interesting and informative page. I will be looking forward to visit your page again and for your other posts as well. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about upholstery. I am glad to stop by your site and know more about upholstery. Keep it up! This is a good read.
In 18th-century London, upholders frequently served as interior decorators responsible for all aspects of a room's decor. These individuals were members of the Worshipful Company of Upholders, whose traditional role, prior to the 18th century, was to provide upholstery and textiles and the fittings for funerals. In the great London furniture-making partnerships of the 18th century, a cabinet-maker usually paired with an upholder: Vile and Cobb, Ince and Mayhew, Chippendale and Rannie or Haig.

  20. That's extremely cool. It looks like a much loved, well worn heirloom...and you're right about the coppery appearance, it makes it look more "ancient" than "antique". Wow...

  21. I read the original tutorial and thought wow, there's the answer to my problem. I have a huge brocade headboard which I made my self but now the colour does not go with the new decor. What to do? I did not want to have to recover it and besides, I couldn't find black brocade. I saw the tutorial and sat and had a think. How to get over the fabric going stiff. I got some spare fabric out and experimented.
The best of the trials was a tube [about 100ml] of black acrylic artists paint. I thinned it first with some water and then some dish soap. This gave the paint a wonderful consistency which was easy to roll onto the headboard. Sorry I don't have any photos but the result? Smooth, even colour that sank into the fabric leaving the pattern visible.
When dry, the fabric remained soft and pliable, but I did notice there was a little black on my hand when I run it over the fabric.
I gently rubbed the fabric with a clean cloth and it removed any pigment residue.

No way does the fabric look painted, my mother and Niece thought I had just recovered it. Cost? £2.50 [about $4]

  23. Basically, there are two different ways to adequately clean floor covering; you can wash it with water and cleanser or you can launder it with synthetics and utilize less dampness. Cleaning rugs with water can be troublesome, as it will require 4-5 days to splash and dry in the immediate daylight. carpet cleaning NYC
