One giant family bed (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em)

Ok....so I know this wouldn't work for everyone...

and I never thought I'd have kids in my bed....

But the reality is that we DO.

Even on nights when they start off in their own bed (they have a double bed in their own bedroom that they share), they both end up in ours sometime during the night....which results in sore necks and stiff backs in the morning.

So....we decided that, with a new baby arriving in a matter of weeks, we needed to make some changes and embrace the situation.

There you have it.....we turned our master bedroom into one. big. bed.

We added a twin bed to our king bed, and the result is one giant bed that fits everyone comfortably :)

When I was thinking about adding another bed to the room, I scoured the internet looking for pictures of someone else that might be as crazy as us....but could find nothing! One or two pictures of mattresses on the floor, and unmade "family beds"...but no real bedrooms with a huge bed. I just wanted to see what it would possibly look like before I made the leap. I am a "bed maker".....as in....I can't start the day without my bed made. It just simply drives me NUTS all day otherwise. I get all "out of control" feeling....and just can't quite function as well as I would if the bed were made.

Weird.  I know.

So....this was bugging me....wondering whether I would manage to still make the bed...and make it somewhat "presentable".

Well...it worked!! I can make it look put together enough to make me feel ok with starting my day :) It's a little trickier to make the bed when it's this huge, but I've got a method now, and it only takes about 2 minutes. Not bad for a little sanity ;)

The bedding is mostly from IKEA....one king duvet + one twin duvet + one large king coverlet across both beds + 4 euro shams and a few random cushions.

The thing is....I really actually love having them close to me in the bed. I love the snuggles. I love knowing that they're safe and sound, and aren't scared. When they're lying beside me, I can tell when they're even starting to get a slight fever (weird momma bear temperature sensor?) and can deal with it before it gets too high, if needed.

The reality is.....they'll be big before too long, and won't be wanting to snuggle. And, as much as I know that's how life goes, and am excited to see them grow up, I know I will be sad when this stage is over. It's just how I am. Can't help it. A bit of a sentimentalist ;)

Although....at 36.5 weeks pregnant, I have to admit....I need my space these nights! And now I've got it :) Lots of space for me and my body pillow :)  Oh...and two small boys...and a husband ;)

Anyways....not for everyone...I know ;)

But it works for us. And whatever helps up all sleep is perfect in my books :)

xoxo

  1. Hey, it is all about surviving and getting some sleep! I always tell my friends with little kids who end up in their beds or just don't sleep that when they are teenagers there will be no worry about them sleeping or sleeping in your bed! In fact, you will be trying to get them OUT of bed!

  2. Ditto! and it looks so beautiful!! (ps I too am 26.5weeks)

  3. Yeah, sore neck and back when sharing bed with kids, but I'm still enjoying it, and I'll miss it when they grow up.. Your big bed looks great

  4. Totally agree, the snuggles won't last long, so we should enjoy them while we can ... and it looks great!!

  5. Oh my gosh! I LOVE it! Now I want to do that- I feel the same way as you, but my daughter doesn't sleep with us, just our 14 month old son. I want to have another one soon, but I want to keep my baby in bed with us too! Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. It looks so inviting and fun...a family snuggle every night- who wouldn't look forward to that?!
I remember pretending all my stuffed animals were my babies and having every last one of them squished into bed with me, not wanting any of them to feel "left out" if they had to be the one sleeping on the outside edge! I still kind if feel sorry for ember when both boys are in bed with us in the morning! She doesn't know about it yet tho...soon enough for sure!!!

  7. Great solution! We've experimented with all sorts of combinations over the years:-) A queen with 2 singles on each side, king + single.... And it doesn't last forever. My littles are almost 6 now, and finally sleeping in their own room most of the time. I loved the years of sleeping with them. I loved hearing their breathing and being so in tune with their well being. I totally support "embracing" the years of them crawling into bed. Happy snuggling!

  8. What a fantastic idea! My son was always joining us in the middle of the night (started when he was almost 2) and because of his moving all around, either me or dh would end up in the guest room. This would have definitely solved our problem. Our son did this up until age three - then he wanted to stay in his own bed. Yes, it was nice to have our bed back, but it was sad to know our baby was growing up and the morning snuggles were over.

  9. Awesome! Ours still like to snuggle in with us or us with them!! I wish we had bought our King bed years ago! Sometimes they even drag their bedding in and curl up on our floor and we wake up and trip over them!! Keep on embracing!

  12. I want to do this! Couple of questions....first, did you join the beds together in the middle? I am not sure how to manage the gap. Second, how did you get the beds to be the same height? We have a king sized bed frame and a high mattress....I think we would have to ditch the frame but it was expensive and I like it. Thanks!

  13. I would really know more about your bed. I'm in the process of putting together a queen and xl twin. I took our queen off the frame and the beds are pretty level. I'm just unsure about the aesthetic part.

  16. This is beautiful! Our famiky bed is a bit smaller (double + twin), and the bedding is a bit less perfect (colors that coordinate but we couldnt afford to buy new stuff that matches), but it does get made everyday and is wonderfully warm. What are you doing about the gap between the mattresses?

  18. Thank you for sharing this! I was also scouring the Internet looking for inspiration pictures since we have just decided to splurge on a King sized bed, but I am going to push it up against the wall and I was wondering what that would look like.

  20. We have a king but it's just not enough space, so I added the crib (open faced) to our bed and somehow I ended up sleeping halfway on the crib and half on my bed. I told my husband That I want to get a twin to add and he thinks I'm crazy?! But I'm the one sleeping in a crib, lol. Like you I've been searching for pictures and I'm glad I found this article. I couldn't imagine not sleeping next to my baby even though he's 13 months I need him by me. Thanks

  26. I love this idea. My husband and I are currently scouring for making a bigger bed (2 kids, 1 large dog, 2 cats and us lol) I want to put 3 twins together, and found an item that you may appreciate!! It goes along the seam between the two beds, no more gap! and you may want to flat sheet your bed, so instead of the elastic corners you make it like they do in the army, I am sure you can sew some together to make them big enough :) I love the colors in your room!

  40. Determine what size mattress you are going to purchase. If you are purchasing a mattress for a young boy a twin size mattress is good, but if you are a major person and there are two people sleeping in the bed I do not advise going with something smaller than a queen size bed. If you are able to afford a king-size bed and you own the room for it, I recommend it. truck mattress
